home > glossary of terms

With a new event, of course we've got a new vocabulary. From Avon, here are some of the terms they'll  be using in the new 2-Day event. If you've been a participant of the previous 3-Day program, some of there terms may look a bit new, but you'll be able to see where they're going.

Business Partner - A supplier of goods or services that offers discounts or other benefits to Avon Walk Participants

Closing Ceremony - The formal completion of the event

Crew - Volunteers providing support to Walkers and Staff throughout the Event; they participate for the entire weekend

Donation - Money given or pledged over time to the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade on behalf of a Participant

Event Eve - The Friday afternoon and evening before the Event begins, when registered Participants complete any necessary administrative tasks, turn in any additional donations, receive their credentials, etc.

Get-Ready-Walks - Regularly-scheduled, volunteer-led walks designed to help Walkers get in physical condition for the Event

Get-Started Sessions - Group meetings led by Walker Buddies for newly registered Participants. A chance to ask questions and create a fundraising and physical training plan

Opening Ceremony - Formal start of the event; includes safety presentation

Participant - A Walker or a Crew member officially registered for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer

Pink Mile - The final walk to the Closing Ceremony (though the actual distance will probably be much less than a mile!)

Quick Stop - A safe area on the event route providing water and portable restrooms for Walkers

Rest Stop - A safe area on the Event route providing food, beverages, portable restrooms, medical services and a place to rest for the Walkers.

Sweep  - A vehicle patrolling the route to pick-up Walkers who need medical support or who are behind the necessary pace to complete the day’s route before dark

Walk Introduction -  Regularly scheduled meetings in each Walk city (and surrounding areas) for potential Participants to learn more about the events. Registered Participants also welcome!

Walker - Someone who has registered to walk in the event

Walker Buddy - Staff members serving as personal contacts for each Walker.

Wellness Village - The destination for all participants at the end of the first day of the Walk; the Village has sleeping tents, food, entertainment, showers, medical care, breast cancer information, and other services. Friends and family will be invited to greet and spend time with Participants in a designated public area of the Village.
